With the publication in the Official Gazette of Legislative Decree no. 51 of 2 April 2026, Italy takes a decisive step in implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2411, dedicated to the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products.
A long-awaited result, marking the start of a concrete operational phase for all entities that, like the district of Torre del Greco, have embarked on the path toward PGI recognition for their products.
In this context fall the requests for recognition of Torre del Greco Coral PGI and Torre del Greco Cameo PGI, identity expressions of a tradition unique in the world.
The decree, which will enter into force on 7 May 2026, clearly and structurally defines the national system: it identifies the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy as the competent authority and establishes the procedures through which applications will be examined, assessed and subsequently forwarded to the EUIPO for recognition at European level.
This is a fundamental step not only from a regulatory perspective, but also from a cultural and economic one, because it introduces concrete tools for the protection, enhancement and international recognizability of craft productions.
For Torre del Greco, this represents the beginning of a new phase: more defined, more structured and finally oriented toward a clear goal of European recognition.
